Food from the sea

Cooking in Bombinhas starts in the water. The sheltered waters of Zimbros Bay and Canto Grande are home to the town's mariculture, and Bombinhas is among the largest producers of farmed shellfish in Santa Catarina. In Zimbros you can buy fresh fish and shellfish just harvested from the sea farms, and the town's restaurants serve what is grown here.

Who it's for
Anyone who loves seafood — and anyone who wants to buy oysters and mussels straight from the people who farm them.
Best time
Year-round. Fresh mullet only during fishing season, from May to July.
How to do it
Zimbros has several fish shops with the catch of the day and shellfish just harvested in the bay. Before buying, check the city's notices: from time to time, harvesting and eating shellfish from Zimbros and Canto Grande is suspended because of toxins in the water. Boa Vista doesn't recommend restaurants — asking the locals is still the best guide.

Menus along the waterfront revolve around the sea: shrimp tasting menus, grilled fish, oysters raw or au gratin, mussels vinaigrette. In winter, mullet from the beach haul shows up roasted, butterflied or stuffed.
